Protestors Prove PA Chamber is On Message
May 25, 2011

I’m Gene Barr, vice president of the Pennsylvania Chamber. Welcome to this month’s Pennsylvania Chamber Minute.

As the state budget debate heats up, the Chamber remains out front on your behalf in advocating for a fiscally responsible spending plan as proposed by the governor.

At the same time, tax-and-spend proponents are seeing their flawed approach in jeopardy and are desperately increasing their activity.

One sure sign that our message is resonating is in the targeting of the Pennsylvania Chamber by hundreds of protestors – mostly government union members – who prefer an agenda of uncontrolled government spending, rather than have the state get its fiscal house in order.

And this isn’t the only time the Pennsylvania Chamber has been targeted by anti-business activists.

In an attempt to stifle our advocacy on your behalf, members of the Service Employees International Union recently showed up at our door because job creators had legitimate concerns about the costs of the federal health-care reform law. The protestors’ cat-calls reflected an unwillingness to try to understand the business community’s position and a clear sign that they simply wanted things their way.

These confirmations strengthen our resolve to fight for policies that will create a better business climate, boost job growth and solidify economic recovery – starting, but not limited to, a state budget that reflects today’ economic realities.

And there is no better time than now to begin to move in a different public policy direction. Pennsylvania was recently highlighted as one of five states with the biggest drop over the past five years in a business climate survey of 500 nationwide CEOs.

It is not surprising that, compared with other states, Pennsylvania is viewed unfavorably by business and industry decision-makers because of our lack of legal reform, high corporate tax rates and other drains on competitiveness.

Fortunately, we have a governor and legislative leaders committed to making the Commonwealth a better place for business, which ultimately means a better place for individuals and families – ironically, some of the very same people who protest the Chamber and its advocacy efforts.

Thanks again for your continued support.

And thanks for spending a minute of your time with the Pennsylvania Chamber…The Statewide Voice of Business.
